Search “6.6kW solar system cost Melbourne” and you’ll get answers ranging from $2,800 to $9,000. That spread isn’t because prices vary that wildly — it’s because different sites calculate the rebate differently, and some of them get it wrong. Here’s how the real number is built, line by line, so you can judge any quote you receive — including ours.
The short answer
In 2026, a quality 6.6kW system (15 × 440W panels with a 5kW inverter) in Melbourne typically lands between $4,500 and $7,500 installed after the federal STC rebate, before any Solar Victoria rebate. Budget systems sit below that range; premium panel and inverter brands sit above it. If you’re eligible for the Solar Victoria rebate, take another $1,400 off.
How the federal rebate is actually calculated
The federal “rebate” is a point-of-sale discount funded by Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). The formula:
System size (kW) × zone rating × deeming years = STCs, rounded down.
For most of metro Melbourne (Zone 4, rating 1.185) in 2026 (5 deeming years):
6.6 × 1.185 × 5 = 39.1 → 39 STCs
At the current market price of roughly $37–40 per certificate, that’s about $1,440–$1,560 off a 6.6kW system.
If a website or quote tells you the STC discount on a 6.6kW Melbourne system is worth $2,300 or more, it’s almost certainly using the wrong zone rating or an outdated deeming period. The Solar Victoria rebate: another $1,400 if you qualify
On top of the federal discount, eligible Victorian households can claim a $1,400 Solar Homes rebate, plus an optional matching interest-free loan of up to $1,400 repaid over four years (about $29/month).
Eligibility as of July 2026:
- Owner-occupier of an existing home
- Combined household taxable income under $150,000 (this dropped from $210,000 on 1 July 2026 — some websites still show the old figure)
- Property valued under $3 million
- No solar PV installed at the address in the last 10 years, and no previous rebate at that address
- Installed by an authorised solar retailer using approved products
Worked example
A mid-range 6.6kW system priced at $7,000 before incentives, for an eligible Melbourne household:
- Gross system price: $7,000
- Federal STC discount (39 STCs × ~$38): −$1,482
- Solar Victoria rebate: −$1,400
- Out of pocket: ~$4,118 (less again if you take the interest-free loan to spread $1,400 over four years)
With typical Melbourne generation, a system like this saves in the region of $1,500–$1,900 a year on bills, putting payback around the 3–5 year mark against a 25-year panel warranty.
Why quotes for the “same” system vary by thousands
- Panel and inverter brand. Tier-1 panels and a reputable inverter cost more upfront and tend to earn it back in reliability and warranty support.
- Roof complexity. Two-storey homes, steep pitches, tile versus tin, and switchboard upgrades all add legitimate cost.
- Who actually installs. Some retailers quote low and then subcontract to whoever’s cheapest that week. Ask who’s doing the physical install and whether they’re SAA-accredited.
- Rebate maths. As above — an inflated STC count makes a quote look cheaper than it will actually be on the day.
One deadline worth knowing
The STC deeming period drops from 5 years to 4 on 1 January 2027, which trims the federal discount on a 6.6kW Melbourne system by roughly $300. It’s not a reason to rush a decision, but if you’re already planning to go ahead, installing before year-end is worth a few hundred dollars.
